Celebrating Yorkshire’s Rich History and the Legacy of Harry Gration
The Yorkshire Society is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated launch of the Harry Gration History Prize 2023/24, a celebration of Yorkshire's vibrant history and a tribute to the much-loved broadcaster, journalist and former history teacher Harry Gration.
This captivating competition is open to history enthusiasts of all ages, from young budding historians to seasoned amateurs, all eager to embark on a journey of original research exploring the multifaceted history of Yorkshire, spanning from the time of the Brigantes to the present day.
Participants are invited to create a compelling short essay based on their original research. The possibilities are endless, as entrants delve into the intriguing tapestry of Yorkshire's past.
The competition is conducted in collaboration with the University of Huddersfield, ensuring that submissions receive expert attention. Entries will be assessed by a distinguished panel of Yorkshire writers and historians, offering participants an opportunity to showcase their passion and research.
Prizes:
Winners will receive, a share of a cash prize amounting of £250, a prestigious certificate and the publication of their winning essays on the Yorkshire Society's official website. Additionally, winners will enjoy media coverage of their success and will attend the Society’s Heritage Summit in Hull
Categories:
Entrants have two categories to choose from:
Young Historians
Open to young historians under 18. Essay length should range from a minimum of 1,000 words to a maximum of 5,000 words.
Open Competition
Designed for those aged 18 and above, with no upper age limit. Essays in this category should span a minimum of 1,500 words to a maximum of 10,000 words, allowing ample room for in-depth exploration.
